- In ancient Rome, traditions were quite different from those we know today, and thankfully so! In those times, February 14th and 15th were dedicated to libertine celebrations: the Roman Lupercalia. This event was supposed to boost fertility.
To this end, two young men, half-naked and dressed in goatskins, roamed the city whipping women's bellies with a piece of leather. This was intended to make them more fertile or to increase milk production in new mothers. To soften the blow of this celebration, it was decided to transform this day into a festival of love, thus softening the story somewhat.
- A different time, a different place: Valentine's Day would fall on February 14th in memory of Father Valentine of Terni. He had the courage to marry Christians in complete secrecy, despite Emperor Claudius II's explicit prohibition.
The new emperor wanted to conscript all men for war and had therefore outlawed marriage. Father Valentine of Terni was arrested and then executed in the public square. To commemorate the courage and tenacity of this man who dared to defy the emperor's orders, February 14th became synonymous with love.
- Lastly, and by far our favorite origin: it was in Great Britain, in the 14th century, that the traditional Valentine's Day was born. According to an English belief, February 14th is the date when birds gather to mark the beginning of the mating season.
A beautiful legend to inaugurate a day entirely dedicated to tenderness and passion. Especially when you consider that many bird couples are completely faithful and stay together for their entire lives.
