How to water your plants in an ecological way thanks to the Ollas from Wepot

At the Montreux Christmas market, we met some wonderful people, including Clément, Quentin, and Pauline. They too are passionate environmentalists nature conservation , they created Wepot : a shop that showcases Ollas . But what exactly is an Olla?

In this article, we'll introduce you to these terracotta pots that will help you water your plants in an eco-friendly . Whether for your houseplants or your garden and its many vegetables , you'll love the concept of natural irrigation . A great way to grow plants while saving water .

The Olla: an ingenious terracotta pot

Like many tricks, this one has existed for thousands of years. Whether in Asia, Africa, or the Middle East, traces of terracotta pots can be found all over the world: these are the first Ollas. Often shaped like amphorae, Ollas allow for the efficient irrigation of plants.

But how does it work? Actually, it's quite simple:

  • You bury your Olla in the ground, next to your plant (maximum 50 cm distance).
  • You fill it with water.
  • And ta-da: the roots are watered perfectly, and at the necessary rate.
  • Even better, the roots of your plant will eventually wrap themselves around the Olla.
  • The result: the plant gets water when it needs it!
  • To complete the design, a small cap on top of the Olla prevents the water from evaporating.

This eliminates the problem of overwatered plants or those dying from drought. You no longer need to worry about watering! Once empty, simply refill the amphora with water and you're good to go for gentle irrigation again.

Wepot has taken on the task of reviving this terracotta pot, a very old irrigation system: it's so good for plants and for the planet too. In addition to being ecologically sound, the idea of watering plants with Ollas, also called Oyas, allows for adaptation to each plant species.

Indeed, with this irrigation system, the plant draws its own water. Very practical, especially for plant enthusiasts with lots of pots in their apartment. This economical watering system works equally well for gardens and houseplants.

Wepot's Ollas: for deep watering

These amphorae are as useful as they are beautiful. Wepot offers both raw and decorated Ollas, and the shop caters to your needs by offering a variety of sizes.

It's possible to water up to 6 plants at the same time with the XL Ollas. This is ideal if you have a garden and want to achieve a little self-sufficiency in watering! These terracotta pots will be invaluable allies.

There's also the XS Olla, specially designed for small pots of indoor plants.

As spring is slowly arriving, and the first preparations around the garden too, we're giving you our top 3 Ollas that we fell in love with!

Concerned about their relationship with water, but also about their environmental impact, Wepot has chosen to work with suppliers based in Switzerland in order to reduce carbon emissions from transportation. Clearly, we have quite a lot in common!

4 tips for watering your plants in an eco-friendly way

We highly recommend using Ollas pots, as they are both practical and economical for water management. To top it all off, these terracotta pots are also very attractive.

While you're deciding on the amphora that appeals to you most, here are 4 tips for watering your garden more economically, and above all, in a more ecological way.

  • Tip #1: Choose plants that suit your needs and are in season. If you prioritize vegetables and fruits that require little water, you will inevitably reduce your watering.
  • Tip #2: It's important to remember to mulch all your vegetable plants. This prevents water evaporation and retains moisture in the soil.
  • Tip #3: Water in the evening or morning, when the air is a little cooler. If you water in the middle of the day, not only will the water evaporate faster, but you also risk burning your plants' leaves.
  • Tip #4: Don't hesitate to use a hoe to break up the surface crust. This will aerate the soil and allow it to absorb water better.

This list is far from exhaustive; indeed, there are many tips for saving water and growing beautiful plants. You can contact experts such as market gardeners, plant growers, and florists in your area.
